magdas HOTEL – a social business by Caritas

03 Mar 2015

We like it – magdas HOTEL celebrated its opening on 14 February 2015.

For more than one year, PKF hotelexperts has been accompanying the development of this social pop-up hotel in the second district of Vienna, next to the public and amusement park Prater, on a pro-bono basis. The development was fathered by the Caritas Services GmbH, an affiliate of the charity organisation Caritas, with the ambition to launch or transform existing operations into a social business.

A former retirement home was converted into a design-oriented 80-room hotel with the magdas Salon (a café currently offering breakfast and snacks; with an enriched food selection soon to come) providing a lovely terrace. Various beneficial features and services are offered, such as rental bicycles, a library, meeting facilities and a garden. A series of events will be kicked off with the magdas Social Dinner on 24 March 2015 (in cooperation with space and place). A certain focus is given to art and design, involving a so-called Artist-in-Residence (artists are foreseen to stay over and may further develop the current design of the hotel).

With comparable prices to Motel One but with standard room sizes featuring about 25 sq m, the hotel positions itself as a budget lifestyle accommodation. However, with its social business character the main aim is to integrate and educate refugees (about 20 of the 25 employees are from various conflicted areas, e.g. Afghanistan, Syria, Somalia and Iraq). The appealing public spaces are foreseen to invite people to stay and interact with each other, creating an international and cultural pot, where business travellers, families and city tourists meet multiculturalism.

We are very glad that with our consultancy services we were able to take part in creating and developing the initial idea into the realisation of a sustainable social business, which in our opinion enriches the hotel landscape in Vienna and might stimulate further developments in this field.
